Our Top Tips on Prawn Fishing
Prawn fishing can be an exciting and rewarding experience, and for many visiting Huka Prawn Park, we know that this could very well be your first time giving it a go. But even experienced anglers can always learn a thing or two in perfecting their prawn fishing game.
Whether you’re looking for a fun day out with the family or aiming to fill your bucket with prawns, knowing the best techniques is essential for a successful catch. Believe us, we understand that catching prawns isn’t always an easy task (we’ve had plenty of practice!). So, here are our top tips to help you catch yourself a prawn or two on your next visit.
1. Know Their Hiding Spots
Our first top tip to catching your first prawn is knowing where they like to hide! Prawns are creatures of habit and tend to seek out darker, secluded areas. At Huka Prawn Park, they can often be found under the crates or beneath the wooden boards. Try casting your line through the slats in the boards and be patient… your next nibble might be just beneath the surface!
2. Getting the Bait Right!
It’s important to get the bait placed just right on your hook. If the bait is too close to the hook, you may find the prawn nibbling away at the bait while the hook stays untouched. Make sure the bait is secure so it’s easy for the prawn to latch onto the hook. Always ensure the hook point is exposed for a better chance of a successful catch.
3. Patience is Key
Now, we know you’re eager to catch a prawn. The excitement and adrenaline kick in the minute you’re handed your rod and bucket. But here’s the secret – don’t rush! Take your time to scope out the best spot to sit and wait. Relax, take in the scenery, and enjoy the moment. Remember the story of the tortoise and the hare? Slow and steady wins the race. You have all day to relax, chat, and maybe even enjoy one of our delicious prawn packs by the waterside while you wait for that line to pull and signal a prawn is interested.

4. Stay Positive and HAVE FUN!
After all, the best part of prawn fishing is the experience, and you’ll always leave with a story to tell! Take the time to enjoy this great experience. Whether you’re with family or friends, make the day one to remember!
We can’t wait to see you at Huka Prawn Park – good luck, and happy fishing!
