The Return of a Classic: Prawn Fishing Relaunches at Huka Prawn Park for a Limited Time

Our team has been consistently working hard behind the scenes, and we are thrilled to announce the next step in the long journey of the Prawn Fishing. We have a pond teeming with prawns which will be opening for this weekend only (Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th October 2024) to allow you the chance to trial this much-loved activity for a limited time.

The activities park is open and operating throughout the October holiday season, please visit the homepage for opening hours, while the Prawn Fishing will be trialed for the weekend of Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October 2024, in a limited capacity of hourly timeslots.

Prawn Fishing must be purchased per person in addition to your park entry fee. Passes are available for purchase upon arrival. Taupō Locals receive special rates! Just bring a proof of residence.

Please note that the capacity for fishing is 200 people at a time.

With our new geothermal heating system up and running, combined with a series of successful larval runs over the past 6-9 months, we have observed good survival and growth rates among a decent number of prawns. As a result, we now have an outdoor pond nicely stocked with prawns of various sizes, ready to trial fishing once again. While we proceed with caution until we receive the new breeding stock and initiate the corresponding breeding plan, this week will provide an opportunity to review the behaviors and challenges associated with prawn fishing, allowing us to assess the possibility of reintroducing it on a seasonal schedule. After evaluating the success of this initial trial, we will reassess the fishing success rate and remaining numbers before planning for the future.

As always, please remember that this is a fishing activity, and a catch is not always guaranteed. We have been testing the pond and know the prawns are biting, so we hope everyone has some luck. As this return is eagerly anticipated by many, we hope everyone will fish responsibly to ensure that others can also enjoy the thrill of the catch.
